The sun was just sinking under the hills when we pulled ourselves up the last rock to the top of a small mountain. Down below, the lights of Custer, SD, glinted up at us. Above us, the stars began coming out of the darkening sky. We sat down . . . and waited. When would they begin? Suddenly, a small red light began climbing high into the sky. Higher and higher it went, and we all held our breaths in anticipation. Then, boom! The sky was lit with the colors of a huge firework! A faint cheer rose up from far below. We got out the cookies we had brought and munched them as we watched the fireworks.

We were staying in the Black Hills of South Dakota. We had a lot of fun there—climbing Black Elk Peak, supping and kayaking on the lakes, and even seeing Mount Rushmore! But my favorite part of the Black Hills was those fireworks!

It’s simple: God is holy and just. That means He must punish sin. Because we have all broken God’s Law, we are sinners who deserve God’s wrath. God’s punishment for sin is eternal death in Hell. But because He loves you, He became a Man—Jesus-- and died on the Cross to be punished instead of you. Then, Jesus was buried and rose again alive into Heaven! To receive this gift of eternal life, you must repent (turn from your sin) and trust in Jesus’ sacrifice to save you from God’s wrath against your sin.
