White Sands National Park in New Mexico, sun shining over hikers standing on tall white gypsum sand dune in the desert preparing to sled down, story about sledding or sandboarding in white sands

When you live on the road, holidays are always different. This past Valentine’s Day, we were in southern New Mexico, near White Sands National Park. The first different thing was that we got our valentines from Mom and Dad a few days before Valentine’s Day. The second thing was the valentines themselves.

On Monday, we got in the car as soon as we were done school and drove down to White Sands. We had heard about how you can slide down the large dunes on sleds. As part of the ruse, Mom suggested using big, black trash bags instead of sleds. But when we pulled into the sandy parking lot and opened the trunk, Dad pulled out, not black trash bags, but real, colorful sleds!

We all charged up to the nearest dune to try it out. It was so fast! I can’t think of any better valentine than those sleds!

When you’re coming down a steep dune, more times than not there is a hard jolt at the bottom where you tend to fall off the sled. After a while, we learned how to prepare for this tumble. You just have to make sure you are ready well before the bottom.

The Bible talks about something far more important to be ready for. Matthew 24:44 says, “Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” Will you be ready when Jesus comes back “the end of the age?” (Matthew 24:3). Are you ready?

It’s simple: God is holy and just. That means He must punish sin. Because we have all broken God’s Law, we are sinners who deserve God’s wrath. God’s punishment for sin is eternal death in Hell. But because He loves you, He became a Man—Jesus-- and died on the Cross to be punished instead of you. Then, Jesus was buried and rose again alive into Heaven! To receive this gift of eternal life, you must repent (turn from your sin) and trust in Jesus’ sacrifice to save you from God’s wrath against your sin.
